I’ve paraglided in a few places, but paragliding in Mu Cang Chai is still very different: gliding over the golden rice terraces feels much more intimate and authentic than flying in other countries.

Mu Cang Chai is a highland district in Yen Bai Province, located in Northwest Vietnam, famous for its terraced rice fields, most beautiful during the golden harvest season from September to October, when the entire valley turns a brilliant shade of gold.

Khau Pha Pass was chosen as the main takeoff point thanks to its ideal altitude, gentle slopes, and stable wind conditions, making it perfect for paragliding. From the air, I could take in sweeping views of the golden rice terraces, majestic mountains, and peaceful villages below.

The blend of untouched nature, local culture, and the pure sense of freedom while flying makes paragliding at Khau Pha a truly distinctive and unforgettable experience

Detailed review of the experience (Actual experience)

My paragliding experience in Mu Cang Chai was one of my most memorable adventures in Northwest Vietnam. Compared to paragliding Da Nang, flying here felt more immersive and left me amazed by the region’s majestic natural beauty.

#1. How to get to the takeoff point and check in

I booked my paragliding flight at Khau Phạ Pass in Mù Cang Chải. According to the scheduled time (around 8:00 AM or the pre-booked time slot), the organizing team contacted me and picked me up directly from my homestay in town by pickup truck.

From the gathering point at the foot of the pass, I proceeded with the check-in process. This included confirming my personal information, a quick weight check to assign a suitable pilot, and signing a liability waiver for participating in an adventure sport. The technical team clearly explained the flight conditions, including:

  • Weight limit (typically 25kg – 90kg)
  • Basic health requirements
  • No alcohol consumption before the flight

After check-in, I was transferred to a 4×4 off-road vehicle to reach the take-off point on the mountainside. The road was steep and rough, so a specialized vehicle was necessary for safety.

At the launch site, the safety procedure was conducted very thoroughly:

  • Helmet and certified tandem harness properly fitted
  • Carabiners, connection lines, and canopy system carefully checked
  • Instructions on how to run during take-off and how to sit once airborne
  • Clear briefing on the landing procedure

The pilot flying with me was licensed and experienced in tandem paragliding. Before take-off, they checked wind direction and wind speed, and flights were only conducted when conditions met safety standards. If the weather was not suitable, the flight would be postponed or rescheduled.

#2. The feeling of flying

After the pilot’s signal, I ran a few steps forward as instructed. Once the canopy caught the wind, I was lifted off the ground smoothly and effortlessly.

The flight lasted about 10–15 minutes, depending on wind conditions that day. Throughout the flight, I simply maintained the correct sitting posture while the pilot controlled direction, altitude, and speed. I was also given a brief introduction to the landscape below — the iconic terraced rice fields of Mù Cang Chải and the valley stretching beneath Khau Phạ Pass.

The actual sensation was far less “extreme” than I had imagined. The flight was stable and surprisingly smooth, with no strong shaking. Even for those who are afraid of heights, this experience is manageable as long as you stay calm and follow instructions.

#3. Landing and post-flight emotions

About one to two minutes before landing, the pilot reminded me to adjust my posture by slightly lifting my legs forward for proper ground contact. The landing zone was a flat area in the valley, where the ground support team was already waiting.

The landing itself was gentle — almost like taking a small step forward and standing firmly again. After removing the harness and equipment, I had time to rest and received the photos and videos recorded during the flight.

What impressed me most was not only the aerial view but also the professionalism of the service. From pickup to landing, the entire process was clearly organized, safety-focused, and well-coordinated. To me, this was not a spontaneous adventure activity, but a well-managed and professionally operated experience.

Compared to scuba diving Nha Trang, this aerial adventure gave me a different sense of achievement, and the ride back to the homestay allowed me to reflect on the challenge and the majestic beauty of Northwest Vietnam’s mountains, terraced rice fields, and villages.
