This market is located right on Hoang Quoc Viet Street, Hung Thang Ward, and is very easy to find if you’re coming from the city center.

The market only operates on the three weekend days—Friday, Saturday, and Sunday—starting at 5 PM, but I found that the atmosphere really becomes most vibrant and bustling after 9 PM. The space here is as large as 5,000 m², with about 335 stalls, divided into two fairly distinct areas.

  • Floor 1: This is where you’ll find souvenirs, bags, and handicrafts, perfect for browsing and picking out gifts to take home.
  • Second floor: This area truly captivated me with its culinary paradise, offering a wide variety of fresh seafood, snacks, and coffee. What impressed me most was how this place, formerly a makeshift market, has been renovated and is now very spacious and clean.

The feeling of walking amidst the bustling crowds while savoring local specialties in the cool sea breeze is a very authentic experience of the rhythm of life in Ha Long.

Top 07 experiences at Bai Chay Night Market you shouldn’t miss

Bai Chay Market is where I truly felt the vibrant nightlife of Ha Long, it was both lively and bustling, yet also felt very familiar and easy to immerse myself in. Just stepping into the market, with its bright lights and the aroma of grilled food wafting everywhere, was enough to make me excited.

#1. Enjoy fresh seafood

I chose a seafood stall located right in the middle of the market, near the main walkway (the busiest area). The stall had a glass tank displaying the seafood in front, making it easy to spot. I stood there choosing squid and oysters directly and had them prepared on the spot.

The vendors were quite quick, clearly advising on each type and quoting prices beforehand, which made me feel quite reassured. The stir-fried squid was sweet and chewy; the grilled oysters with scallion oil were rich and fragrant.

The space had simple plastic tables and chairs, and although it was noisy and bustling, it felt like a real market experience. The total bill was about 250,000 VND (~15 AUD) for two dishes. I paid in cash; some stalls accepted bank transfers, but cash was still more convenient.

#2. Enjoy rice rolls with squid sausage

The rice roll stall I ate at was located a little further inside, in the food court (less smoky than the seafood section). It was a small stall, with only a few low tables and chairs, but it was always crowded.

I waited about 5 minutes for my food. The rice rolls were hot and soft, the squid sausage was crispy and fragrant, and the dipping sauce was delicious.

The price was around 50,000 VND (~3 AUD), paid at the counter after eating. The vendor was quite friendly and cheerful, making for a very pleasant experience.

#3. Enjoy unique snacks

The snack area at Bai Chay Night Market is always crowded and bustling, with stalls lined up along the walkways, especially near the entrance and the center, which is always busy.

I tried quite a few dishes such as grilled skewers, hot glutinous rice balls, fried fermented pork rolls, clam porridge, and especially Ha Long pearl yogurt, which was refreshing, mildly sweet, and perfect for “cutting off the richness of other foods.”

In addition, there are milk tea, juices, donuts, baked potatoes… all kinds of snacks to enjoy while walking around. Prices are quite cheap, only about 10,000 – 40,000 VND (~0.6 – 2.5 AUD) per item, and the vendors are quick and friendly.

The atmosphere is lively, the smell of grilled food is delicious, and eating while strolling around feels very vibrant and truly reflects the night market experience.

#4. Buy unique souvenirs

The souvenir area of Bai Chay Night Market stretches along both sides, visible right from the entrance, one of the best spots to explore what to do when visiting the market.

I stopped at a stall near the end of the right-hand row, displaying many keychains, bracelets, and decorations made from seashells.

The stall owner was quite enthusiastic, introducing each item and even offering a small discount for bulk purchases. I bought a few items for about 80,000 VND (~5 AUD), and I could pay by bank transfer or cash.

#5. Buy Quang Ninh specialties

I chose a specialty shop in the central market area. The counter was quite large, with clear price lists and neatly packaged items. Items like squid patties, dried squid, yellowfin fish, shrimp paste, sea worms, etc., were all available, priced around 200,000 – 500,000 VND (~12 – 31 AUD). The staff provided thorough advice and even offered vacuum packaging for easy transport over long distances.

If I’m bringing something to Australia, I’ve been advised to choose processed and well-packaged dried goods like dried squid, dried fish, dried shrimp paste, etc., as they can be checked in but still need to be declared. Fresh or unprocessed seafood should not be brought in, as there’s a high chance it will be confiscated.

#6. Explore handicrafts and textiles

This area of Bai Chay Market is slightly more secluded and quieter. I walked slowly to see the stalls selling lacquer paintings, embroidered bags, and handmade items.

Some stalls were still making products on the spot, which was very interesting. Prices start from 100,000 VND (~6 AUD), suitable if you want to buy valuable souvenirs. The sellers weren’t overly pushy; they mostly let customers browse before offering advice.

#7.  Immerse in the night market vibe & take Instagram-worthy photos

As evening approached, the market became increasingly crowded, especially the area near the entrance and the food stalls, which were always packed with people. I took advantage of the opportunity to take photos of the lantern-lit sections and brightly lit stalls, they turned out beautifully in pictures.

I walked quite a bit, so my legs were a little tired, but in return, I felt very happy and excited. My total expenses for the evening were around 400,000 – 600,000 VND (~25 – 38 AUD), not too expensive for a complete evening of eating, shopping, and experiencing the market.

05 things to note when visiting Bai Chay Market

Bai Chay Night Market is one of the popular tourist attractions in Halong Bay Vietnam, and it can get very crowded. Without some experience, it’s easy to get lost in the crowds or overpay. Here are 5 useful tips to help you enjoy a smoother visit.

Note when visiting Bai Chay Market
Note when visiting Bai Chay Market
  • Arrive early, around 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM, to avoid the crowds: After 8 PM, the market starts to get crowded, especially the food court where it’s very difficult to find a seat. Going early makes it easier to choose a good restaurant and gives you more time to stroll around comfortably.
  • Always ask for the price before ordering or buying anything: Some stalls don’t clearly display prices, especially for seafood which is sold by weight. I usually ask for the price per plate or per kilogram before choosing to avoid surprises when paying.
  • Prioritize busy stalls that prepare food on the spot: Stalls with many customers usually guarantee freshness and quick turnaround. I chose a stall with a tank of live seafood that was prepared right in front of me for greater peace of mind.
  • Bring small denomination cash: Although many stalls accept bank transfers, snack stalls or smaller vendors still prefer cash. Having small change readily available makes payments quicker and eliminates waiting times.
  • Keep your personal belongings safe while moving around: The passageway is quite narrow and crowded, making collisions easy. I always wear my bag in front of my chest and avoid holding my phone when jostling through crowds to prevent it from falling or being pickpocketed.

Conclusion

Bai Chay Night Market is a must-visit destination in Ha Long for delicious food, fun activities, and shopping. The lively atmosphere, diverse food options, and reasonable prices left me quite satisfied. If I have the chance to return, this will still be a top destination for me.
